Buy Reduce™ Products—Help Support Green Causes
Atlanta, GA, January 14, 2010
Have you heard of 1% for the Planet℠? It is a bit different from your typical charity. It is a not-for-profit organization whose members pledge to donate 1 percent of sales to environmental causes. As a member, you can choose some well-known causes, and/or smaller local ones that may often get ignored.
We became a member in 2010 and will donate a portion of all Reduce brand products to support green causes. Of all the many cool things we have planned for 2010 (new products, international trade shows, etc.), this is the coolest in my opinion.
We chose this organization after looking at a wide variety of options. And what convinced us was the opportunity to make a difference not just on a broader scale, but also at a very local level—to impact the community outside our back door, so-so-speak.
Begun in 2002 by the founder of Patagonia, 1% for the Planet (1% FTP) is made up of over 1,000 businesses that donate over $12 million annually to environmental groups worldwide. Since it began, the group has raised over $42 million--not shabby! As our sales grow, we’ll help that total grow as well. And another benefit or joining 1% FTP is the opportunity to get to know other like-minded companies and share information on how we can all be better environmental stewards.
We developed the Reduce line of products because we wanted to make it a little easier for people to reduce their carbon footprint and live a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Take Reduce™ WaterWeek™—it is a very simple solution to a nasty problem. Keep the set of five water bottles chilling in your fridge ready to grab when you need it and you are no longer likely to buy the disposable water bottles (of which only about 25% end up recycled, the rest are washing up on shores across the world). It’s not rocket science, but it is a small step that if taken by many, results in significant change for the environment.

Base Brands’ Reduce™ Compactor Can Chosen as Finalist in 2010 Housewares Design Awards for Innovative, Eco-friendly Design
Atlanta, GA, December 4, 2009
The Reduce™ Compactor Can, recently launched by Base Brands™(http://www.basebrands.com), is a finalist in the 2010 Housewares Design Awards, presented by HomeWorld Business. Chosen from over 300 entrants in 13 categories for its unique design and function, the Reduce Compactor Can (http://www.reduceeveryday.com) is the only garbage can that compacts trash without plugs or batteries, making it both eco-friendly and cost efficient.
The 64 finalists were chosen by a panel of judges, including retailers, practicing designers and new product development experts. The Reduce Compactor Can, along with the other finalists, will now have the chance to win “Best Of” awards within the 13 categories. A Best of Category selection, along with the three Best of Best products and the three Green House Awards will be announced at the Housewares Design Awards Ceremony in New York City, on February 3, 2010.
The Reduce Compactor Can is part of the Reduce™, eco-friendly line of water bottles and kitchen products, all designed to make “green” living easier. Ken Kreafle, CEO and founder of Base Brands, said, “Being recognized as a finalist in the Housewares Design Awards is a huge honor. We developed the Reduce Compactor Can with the same premise that we develop all of our Reduce eco-friendly products, like WaterWeek™ and Melaboo™.It incorporates great design, is friendly to the environment, is easy to use and clean, and saves consumers money.”
The heavy duty stainless steel trash can has a built-in compactor within the lid, allowing consumers to compact trash without any plugs or batteries and to fit two times more trash into a bag. “It is an easier and more sanitary solution than pushing down your garbage to make more room. The Compactor Can saves both time and money, and sends less trash to landfills,” Kreafle continued. The Compactor Can’s lid is foot pedal-activated and its full-sized compacting disc wipes clean with a wet cloth or towel.
The Reduce Compactor Can is currently available at Container Stores nationwide and online at www.reduceeveryday.com.
BPA News
ATLANTA, September 3, 2009
Dear Friends and Customers of the Reduce™ Family of Products,
I wanted to contact you regarding the recent news stories about the presence of bisphenol-a (BPA) in reusable water bottles. A recent August 31, 2009 Advertising Age article noted that Sigg, a popular bottle maker, stated that its products made prior to August 2008 do in fact contain trace amounts of BPA. I thought it prudent and helpful to reach out to you to confirm that Base Brands™, maker of the Reduce family of reusable water bottles, has never produced any product, including all water bottles, with any amount of BPA.
I founded Base Brands in 2005 because I wanted to create a different kind of company—one that gives consumers an honest way to make life a little simpler, and greener, when possible. We create simple solutions for everyday problems, and pride ourselves on creating products that we’d be proud to give our family to use, every day of the week. So, the thought of using BPA in any of our products has never been an option.
It is important to point out why BPA is considered harmful to our health. BPA, although widely used for over 50 years until recently, has been found to cause developmental problems, neurotoxicity, hormone disruption and carcinogenic effects, even at low doses, during laboratory tests on rats. There are thoughts that BPA could be linked as a precursor to breast cancer and even obesity. It is obviously not a chemical that we should expose to our kids, parents, friends or ourselves.
Reduce water bottles are made of BPA-free plastic, stainless steel and aluminum. Our plastic Reduce WaterWeek set is made of high quality ABS plastic that stands up to repeated use and washing. Our stainless steel water bottles are of the highest food grade quality (18/8 stainless steel), making them both sturdy and safe. Our aluminum bottles do not contain any BPA, even though they are coated inside. Rest assured that all of our water bottles and food-related products are free of harmful chemicals or toxins.
At Base Brands, we are trying to make a positive difference for our planet by creating attractive, long-lasting reusable water bottles that make it simple and easy to stop using wasteful disposable water bottles—bottles that end up polluting our landfills and oceans. Thanks for being a friend to Base Brands and Reduce Water Bottles. We look forward to providing you with even more new and inventive water bottles, kitchen products and housewares.
